Universal Robots’ robot arms are lightweight and easy to use

The UR3, from Universal Robots

Among the many innovative, state-of-the-art automation products that Advanced Motion & Controls Ltd. makes available in Canada are the unique collaborative robot arms, or “cobots”, built by Universal Robots (UR). These lightweight, flexible machines can automate tasks in applications for a wide range of industrial sectors.

With their reliability, versatility, and ease of use, cobots ensure a quick return on investment for companies who want to lighten the workload of manufacturing tasks.

Many great user benefits

UR’s cobots are changing the landscape of the modern industrial and collaborative robot sector. Each robotic arm is easy to program through a touchscreen tablet displaying a 3D visualization, enabling users to operate the machine with simple arrow keys. A cobot is also easy to set up in a work environment, and they take up little space; users can move the machine between different processes with minimal effort.

Another key benefit of using cobots is that they act as a safer alternative. By using them for dangerous, dirty, or repetitive tasks, companies eliminate the risks of workplace injuries, occupational disease, and musculoskeletal strain. Cobots are approved and certified by the German Technical Inspection Association, increasing their safety credentials.

UR manufactures three designs of cobots:

  • UR3 – This compact, super-flexible tabletop robot is ideal for light assembly tasks and automated workbench scenarios, such as polish, glue, and screw applications. Weighing only 11 kilograms, the UR3 operates well alongside workers when mounted on a table. Each wrist joint is capable of 360-degree rotation, and the end joint has infinite rotation. Reach radius of 50 centimetres.
  • UR5 – Recommended for automating repetitive and dangerous work applications, as well as low-weight collaborative processes like picking, placing, and testing. The UR5 can reach a working radius of 85 centimetres and can handle payloads of up to five kilograms.
  • UR10 – Built for bigger tasks that demand precision and reliability. Ideal for heavier-weight collaborative processes like packaging, palletizing, assembly, and pick and place. Its reach radius of 1.3 metres enables it to handle jobs requiring a larger space.
